SURVIVING WINTER APPEAL
East London Community Foundation has launched their appeal to help elderly and vulnerable people get through the winter. Surviving Winter is a UK-wide campaign created to encourage individuals to donate to help older and vulnerable people affected by the cold winter.
The campaign was instigated by donors who wanted to forgo their Winter Fuel Payment to support those more at risk throughout the winter months.
UK Community Foundations are coordinators of the campaign and East London Community Foundation is running the campaign for our local area. What we collect, thanks to the generosity of the public, will be distributed to local people in need.
All of the money raised in Surviving Winter will be used to provide support to older and vulnerable people who are suffering because of fuel poverty
With rising fuel bills and the prospect of another cold winter, older and vulnerable people are at risk. 5.4 million households are living in fuel poverty and almost half of those are aged over 60. Each year around 20,000 more older people die in winter months than in other months. Last winter there were an estimated 25,400 excess winter deaths.
For every winter-related death there will be dozens of people suffering illness and hardship, isolation, depression and having to choose between eating and heating are all factors.
Donate to your local Surviving Winter fund to help older and vulnerable people in your local community survive this winter by making sure they can afford to stay warm, eat well and remain mobile, as well as help them in practical ways such as ensuring they can make doctor’s appointments, get to the shops, and maintain an active social life.
If you would like to be involved in the appeal in any way, please contact us at anja@elcf.org.uk

ELCF welcomes Chair of the Charity Commission
We were delighted to welcome Dame Suzi Leather, the Chair of the Charity Commission, to East London Community Foundation recently. Dame Suzi and her colleague Kensa Cooper came to find out about the important work we do to support small charities and community groups in East and North East London by giving out small grants and advising donors on effective charitable giving.

Dame Suzi Leather and Kensa Cooper met with ELCF Vice Chair David Harris, Acting Director Anja Beinroth, and members of the Haringey Grassroots Grants panel at the premises of Casa de la Salud Hispano-Americana, a small charity which provides health services for Spanish-speakers in London.
Dame Suzi enjoyed her time with us:
"I was particularly interested to learn about the issues faced by the local organsations we met, and it was very heartening to see the passion and commitment of the people that run them. It proved very useful to have both the perspective of you as grantmaker, as well as that of local organisations.
"It was a very interesting and insightful
meeting and we learned a huge amount in the short time we were with you. You've certainly given us a lot to think about."
